Just put your DEEP or MEDIUM super on top of the bottom board, and latch it to the bottom board like you'd do with any super!

Product Notes:

Due to the height of the super and the bottom board, you CAN NOT use a division board with this product.
It is only for single colony operation.
The default setting is for medium super.
You need to remove the shim adapter to put a deep super on top.

So I bought an original apimaye 4 deep hive. The design is genius however the brood chamber is fixed to the base which restricts certain manipulations. This kit allows any medium or deep to be set on top and stacked in any way. Makes creating splits super easy using existing deeps. Seems to me like all units should be sold this way. Highly recommended.

Easier split management

I ordered 2 complete hives and a nuc in November 2021, for delivery in April 2022. During that timeframe, I conducted extensive research on hives, and decided my apiary will be all Apimaye. When I received the bees, I moved the hived colonies out of their wooden home and into Apimaye, and installed the nuc in the 3rd Apimaye. My 3 colonies thrived throughout countless 100 degree plus Central Texas summer days. There was very little bearding, indicating the insolation helped the bees keep internal temperatures exactly where they needed to be. The one complaint I had with Apimaye is the inability to separated the brood box from the bottom board, preventing box reversing. This Hive Kit fixes that problem. In April, 2023 I plan on splitting my 3 colonies to 6 and adding another nuc. This Hive Kit will make this expansion much easier, simply by pulling the top boxes, setting them on the bottom board and then equalizing frames between the now 6 hives.

Great for reversing brood boxes

This fixes my one complaint with standard Apimaye hives, which is that you can't reverse the brood boxes without manipulating individual frames.

Another case when this extra flexibility comes in handy is when dead bees have accumulated at the bottom of the hive during winter, plugging the front entrance. Instead of removing the frames individually, you just take the bottom brood box off the bottom board and flip the bottom over.

I think the main intended purpose is to be able to turn spare supers into hives, but for me that's secondary.

The only disadvantage to these compared to a standard Apimaye hive is that the front entrance reducer doesn't connect to the hive as securely. I haven't had an issue, but it feels more fragile, and the bees are able to enter the hive by crawling in behind the entrance reducer from above rather than coming through the holes on the bottom. I don't think that a mouse would be able to enter, so it's really not an issue. Oh, and I guess standard Apimaye hives are cheaper than this kit plus a super.
