My three hives were really struggling with bearding in my traditional wooden hives last summer, and again early this summer. We decided to start with one Apimaye hive to see if we liked working with plastic hives and the difference was like night and day! Both of these hives looked identical before we switched over to Apimaye. With our brutal SC summers, this was a no brainer. We've now switched all three hives and we've had zero bearding even in 97-100 degree temperatures.
I've been really happy with this hive so far. I was a little hesitant to switch from wood at first, but after using it, I don't think I'd want to go back.
The insulation is probably my favorite feature. It seems to help the bees handle our hot summer days much better, and I like knowing they'll have a little extra protection when the weather turns cold. The top feeder is also much easier to use than I expected, and I don't have to disturb the colony as much when feeding.
I also like that everything is built into the hive. The screened bottom board, pollen trap, queen excluder, and division board are all included, so I didn't have to buy a bunch of extra pieces. The latches keep everything together nicely, and the handles make moving the hive much easier than a standard wooden box.
Overall, it just feels like a well-thought-out hive. It's easy to work with, easy to clean, and has made hive inspections more enjoyable. If I need another hive in the future, I'll definitely be buying another one.
I am excited to see if my bees will make it through the cold Montana winter with this new hive.
Great easy to work hives, have 10 in our apiary with the oldest being 3 years of age, which only has some minor color fading. The round entrances are especially nice to keep open during times of overnight snow. Really liking the updated bottom board which now uses the same clamps as the brood boxes. Overwinter hive losses have been around 10% since switching to Apimaye and maintenance is by far less.
